Holland Lop Rabbits make excellent pets. They require little care and are very interactive.
Do Holland Lop Rabbits make good pets for children?
Absolutely! We have six children and they all play with the bunnies. Some of the rabbits enjoy being held more than others but all are social. We handle our kits from about three weeks on.
What do I feed my Holland Lop Rabbit?
We feed our rabbits pellets that we buy from Grower's Feed in Ranson, Blue Seal Show Hutch Deluxe. It is also available at Tractor Supply. As long as you change their food slowly over time, your Holland Lop Rabbit will thrive on any pellet you feed it. We supplement our rabbits diet with hay and barley flakes. Old fashioned oats also make good treats. I am aware that some owners provide their rabbits kitchen scraps. We avoid this, as we have seen it adversely effect their stools. Please make sure your rabbit has plenty of fresh water every day.
Do Holland Lop Rabbits like the heat?
No rabbit likes the heat. If you keep your rabbit outside in the summer it is important that you provide an ice bottle for it. We fill two liter bottles with water and freeze them.
Where will my Holland Lop Rabbit live?
Your pet rabbit can live just about anywhere. We've had some in an outside hutch, others in wire cages in the shed, and some in the house. The main thing your rabbit needs is a clean space. If you have an outdoor hutch droppings will most likely fall to the ground and need to be scooped several times a year. If you are using a wire cage system with a litter pan expect to change the litter pan once or twice a week depending on how dirty it becomes. We line our litter pans with horse bedding called equine fresh.
Do I need to clip my Holland Lop Rabbits nails?
Yes, it is important to keep your bunny's nails trim. You may purchase special scissors for this or use regular toenail clippers. Just take off the sharp tip. Rabbits, like dogs, do have a quick running through the nail. You'll want to avoid clipping this. Should you nick it by accident a 50/50 mixture of cornstarch and flour will stop the bleeding.
